BMW zed

The styling reaches back to the older BMWs as well as follows the styling of the present cars so it mixes the different eras and creates a modern desing for this car. There are several unique features of Z e d : the grille is shaped after the older BMWs but the horizontal rails of the grille are the headlights as well. There are LED lights running along the front edge of the rails and so they provide the light upfront. The taillights are LED lights as well. The very definite separation on the middle of the nose is taken further and so this separation runs all along the middle of the car: it continues up on the nose, the windscreen and the cabin area is separated as well as the rear parts and the back of the car. The cabin itself is unusual since it has a full glass convertible roof: the outside surfaces are like normal side windows but the inside of one side of the separated cabin and the roof piece are hidden in the middle section of the car. When needed the inner sidewindow and the roof piece are lifted up from the middle and then the roof piece turns down from vertical to its place. This way the cabin can be closed in a couple of seconds with glass from all around. The communication between the two parts of the cabin is by intercom. The seats are separated along their middle plane as well. This way the seat itself is attached to the car and the width of the back part the width of the lower part and the height of the lower part can be separately adjusted so it is comfortable for everyone. The fly-by-wire steering wheel, semi-automatic paddleshift system and pedals can be pushed forward or pulled back to the driver on a central rail. This roadster is powered by a more environment friendly common-rail high pressure fuel-injection turbo diesel engine. It is a V6 2.4 litre engine with one turbo charger. This way there is enough power to give good performance together with good fuel-economy. As it is common and traditional among BMWs, Z e d has rear wheel drive. The whole car is built to be very lightweight: it has an aluminium floor panel to which the engine, transmission and suspensions are attached and the whole body is made of carbon fiber. The same applies to the seats: they have the central aluminium rail to which the adjustable carbon-fiber parts are attached. The name Z e d comes from the substance of the car: Z is the traditional initial of the name for a BMW roadster; d at the end regards to the diesel engine inside and e in the middle suggests the new level of roadsters taken to a different horizon. |
